Devonte’ Graham, a 6-foot-2 2014 point guard from Brewster (N.H.) Academy, has obtained his release from new Appalachian State coach Jim Fox, Brewster coach Jason Smith confirmed to SNY.tv.
“We’re excited to hear that he will be released and we’re excited to be able to communicate with schools,” Smith told SNY.tv.
“wow officially released !!!! Thanking god right now,” Graham Tweeted.
Tim Miles of Nebraska, Mark Gottfried of N.C. State and Ed Cooley of Providence are due in to watch Graham Thursday and coaches from Virginia, Kansas, Florida, Cincinnati and Virginia Tech were expected Friday. Greg McDermott of Creighton was in last week.
“Traffic could grow,” Smith said.
Graham committed to Appalachian State in September 2012 out of Raleigh (N.C.) Broughton High School.
“They say that Appalachian State stole one,” one Division 1 coach said in reference to how the talented player ended up at that level.
Smith said Graham requested a release from his NLI last February but was denied.
“He opted to do a postgraduate year at Brewster,” Smith said in September. “He can’t speak with schools because Appalachian State hasn’t released him.”
Appalachian State believes Graham was tampered with by N.C. State — as reported by ESPN.com — after committing and thus denied his release.
In September, the school issued a statement saying the matter was now in the hands of the NCAA and its Board of Governance.
