New Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall continues to rebuild the Vols’ roster.
Tyndall on Wednesday landed a commitment from Tariq Owens, a 6-foot-10 power forward from Baltimore Mount Zion Prep who had previously committed to Ohio. Owens obtained his release from Ohio after coach Jim Christian departed for Boston College.
“Overall, it was positive from his final three schools,” his father, Renard Owens, told SNY.tv. “UT presented the best scenario and opportunity for him to be successful on and off the court.
Owens also considered Temple and UT-Martin, where he just returned from a visit. “Tariq is a stretch 4,” his father said. “He is very mobile and can defend positions 3-5 and can shoot the jumper 15-18 feet. There’s a huge upside for him.” Wednesday is the last day of the late signing period. The Vols previously added Devon Baulkman, a 6-foot-5 guard from Bainbridge, Ga.; Willie Carmichael, a 6-7 power forward from Apopka, Fla.; Ian Chiles, a high-scoring 6-1 guard who is transferring from IUPUI; Eric McKnight, a 6-9 transfer from Florida Gulf Coast; Kevin Punter, a 6-4 shooting guard from State Fair Community College in Missouri; and freshmen Jabari McGhee and Detrick Mostella. The Owens news was first reported by Evan Daniels of Scout.
