Having already visited St. John’s, transferring Georgia Tech forward Robert Carter Jr. plans to visit South Carolina, Maryland and possibly Kansas in the coming days before making a decision on his future, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Carter Jr. is set to trip to South Carolina Saturday and Maryland on Tuesday.
“He enjoyed St. John’s,” Winfred Jordan, Carter’s former coach with the Atlanta XPress, told the AJC. “He thought the chance to play his home games at Madison Square Garden was unbelievable. It’s a big market, and Robert is a Southern kid, and those things kind of impress you.
“But at the end of the day, we just want to make sure that Robert is in the right situation with the right kind of people so he can try to accomplish what his dream is – that’s to get to the next level for basketball.”
Carter Jr., who averaged 11.4 points and 8.4 rebounds last season, knows South Carolina coach Frank Martin from his time with USA Basketball.
“Frank Martin coached him when he went out for the USA team two years in a row for the USA trials,” Jordan told the AJC. “There’s a relationship there. They get along very well. Frank Martin is a guy he respects. He knows Frank Martin’s history. He’s had a guys very similar to Robert, and Frank Martin put them in situations for them to play in the NBA.”
Maryland has incoming big man Trayvon Reed, whom Carter Jr. is friendly with.
“Maryland has the No. 8 recruiting class in the country coming in,” Jordan told the AJC. “That makes it interesting. And his former AAU and high school teammate, Trayvon Reed — that’s where he is going.”
St. John’s has added Christ the King big man Adonis Delarosa and junior college forward Keith Thomas, but is still looking to add to its frontcourt depth.
Carter Jr. hopes to decide by the end of next month.
“He will be enrolling in somebody’s courses at a college by late June,” Jordan told the AJC. “He just wants to make sure to go somewhere where he feels comfortable. He does his own research, and then he comes back to me and asks me what I think. Then it’s all about what he feels he likes because it’s his decision.”
