On top of searching for an athletic director, Rutgers must now find an offensive coordinator for its football team.
John McNulty has left Rutgers to take a job coaching the receivers with the Arizona Cardinals.
“We wish John and his family nothing but the best as they embark on a new challenge with the Arizona Cardinals,” Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said in a statement. “John was an integral part of the Rutgers football family and we will miss him.”
Rutgers running backs coach Gary Brown also left recently to take the same job with the Cleveland Browns.
The hiring of McNulty, 40, was part of a series of additions to the Super Bowl runner-up Cardinals, who named Bill Davis defensive coordinator and Russ Grimm and Mike Miller co-offensive coordinators.
“The thing I feel the best about is there won’t be any changes in philosophy or terminology on both sides of the ball,” Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said on the team’s website. “That’s a big thing, and something you worry about. You don’t want that disruption or uncertainty for our players.”
Soon after the Super Bowl offensive coordinator Todd Haley became head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs while defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergrast was fired.
McNulty was an NFL assistant for six years before coming to Rutgers. He will replace Miller as the receivers coach.
Under McNulty’s guidance, Rutgers became the first college team in history to feature a 3,000-yard passer, a 2,000-yard rusher and two 1,000-yard receivers in 2007.
Last season, McNulty faced abuse from the fans when the team started off 1-5. After one loss, fans yelled at Schiano to “Fire McNulty”
But the Knights rattled off seven straight wins and won the PapaJohns.com Bowl to finish 8-5.
Rutgers had no official comment as of Wednesday evening.
