Maryland Lands JUCO Point Guard Jaylen Brantley; Memphis Adds Point Guard Broddie
Maryland has landed a verbal pledge from Jaylen Brantley, a 6-foot, 173-pound point guard from Odessa (Tex.) Junior College.
Brantley, who attended Maryland Madness on Friday night, also considered SMU, Indiana, Illinois and TCU.
“I just felt it was the best fit for me and will help me develop my game into the best player I can become,” Brantley said by text.
BABC director Leo Papile coached Brantley and Maryland junior forward Jake Layman with that AAU club.
“He’s an old-fashioned lead guard,” Papile told SNY.tv. “He’s really adept at getting the ball up the floor, getting in the offense, making shots. He keeps it pretty simple but he’s a very talented young guard.
“He doesn’t necessarily pass the look test…but he certainly brings a heckuva skillset. He’s very clever, plays at his own pace, three-quarter type pace, gets you in the offense and can really put the ball in the basket.
“In our program over 38 years, he and Dana Barros certainly distinguished themselves as the best shooters as 3-point guys. He can really, really shoot the ball.”
A one-time Marshall signee who did not qualify initially, Brantley will have three years of eligibility remaining. He joins Georgia Tech transfer Robert Carter Jr. in Maryland’s 2015 recruiting haul.
MEMPHIS ADDS POINT GUARD BRODDIEMemphis added a pledge from 2016 Potomac (MD) Oxon Hill point guard Randall Broddie.
“I picked Memphis because of my relationship with coach [Josh] Pastner, and I felt as though it was a great fit,” he told SNY.tv.
Broddie also considered Maryland, Penn State and Cincinnati.
“He’s a high-level scorer and an athlete,” Team Takeover coach Keith Stevens said.
