If Bobby Gonzalez and Seton Hall (14-12, 5-9) stand any shot of making the NIT, they must win tonight’s home game with South Florida (8-18, 3-11).
The Bulls have lost four straight and are coming off a 64-50 loss at UConn on Saturday.
“We’re still trying to have a winning season,” Gonzo said after Sunday’s loss at St. John’s. “We still have other games ahead of us. We know that the next one’s very important because we’ve lost three in a row now on the road, two Top 10 teams. Now we’ve got to try to bounce back and try to see if we can just get one game at a time.”
After the South Florida game, Seton Hall on Saturday hosts No. 1 Pitt, which is coming off last night’s stunning loss to Providence, and then goes on an extended road trip to play both No. 6 Louisville and Cincinnati.
If Seton Hall goes 1-3 in these final four games, it would finish 15-15, 6-12 in the conference. The Pirates would likely need to win at least one game in the Big East tournament to have any shot at the NIT.
“We know that we still have Louisville, Pittsburgh,” Gonzo said. “You just gotta go one at a time, finish the year, see what you end up with and see what you can do in the Big East tournament.”
NOTES
St. John’s coach Norm Roberts on Sunday fired back at Gonzalez, who is on record saying he wanted to play the game at Madison Square Garden instead of Carnesecca Arena.
“It’s the kids game, it ain’t about the coaches,” Roberts said. “It ain’t about the coaches, it’s about the kids. And I also think that this is a great place to play, a great place to play. It has a name of a Hall of Fame coach, so it’s an honor to play on that floor whenever you come in here.”
Gonzalez said that Jeremy Hazell had to carry the casket Saturday of one of his close friends from Harlem who was killed. Understandably, Hazell was not open to discussing the matter in an interview, but our thoughts and prayers go out to him….Eugene Harvey had some kind of allergic reaction prior to the St. John’s game, Gonzalez said, and had to get a shot. He scored 0 points while committing six turnovers. He made three plays down the stretch that contributed to the loss: getting a pass stolen on the perimeter by Paris Horne that led to a bucket; missing a finger roll layup that would’ve broken a 61-all tie; and then firing up a desperation 3-pointer after he thought he was fouled by Malik Boothe in the final 10.6 seconds…Paterson Catholic meets Kennedy on Saturday in the Passaic County championship game at Wayne Valley. Seton Hall is involved with PC junior forward Fuquan Edwin, who is also considering Providence and Temple. Seton Hall is also scouting 6-5 PC freshman point guard Kyle Anderson.
