Texas senior forward Jonathan Holmes drained a game-winning 3-pointer from the left corner to lead No. 7 Texas to a stunning 55-54 victory over No. 24 UConn at Gampel Pavilion.
The loss snapped the Huskies’ 44-game winning-streak against non-conference opponents at Gampel.
In the last 10 days, Texas (6-0) has beaten Iowa, Cal and now the Huskies — the latter two with sophomore point guard Isaiah Taylor out with a fractured wrist. Texas won the 2K Classic last week at Madison Square Garden, but Taylor was injured in the Iowa game.
UConn senior point guard Ryan Boatright went for 24 points and seven rebounds for UConn, but left the arena on crutches after re-injuring his ankle on the final play. He said he could miss the Yale game on Friday, but won’t be out “two or three games,” according to Dave Borges of the New Haven Register.
After the Yale game, UConn doesn’t play again until Dec. 14 against Coppin State. The Huskies face Duke Dec. 18 at the Meadowlands.
“[Boatright] was limping pretty bad,” UConn coach Kevin Ollie told reporters. “We’ll see. We’ll assess him. We have a great medical staff that’ll get him better, and Ryan is very meticulous about his body so he’s going to get in and do rehab. He hates missing practice, so that’s one guy I’m not worried about wanting to get back on the court.”
Holmes finished with 13 points and eight rebounds and Javan Felix and Demarcus Holland scored 10 apiece.
Daniel Hamilton added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (3-2).
UConn played without Rodney Purvis (ankle) and Omar Calhoun (knee).
