Dominic Cheek, the No. 4 shooting guard in the Class of 2009 out of St. Anthony in Jersey City, is attending Jim Calhoun’s elite basketball camp this weekend — and say he’s actively considering joining Kemba Walker in Storrs.
“I love playing with Kemba,” Cheek told the Connecticut Post. “He’s a cool dude, just like me. He’s humble and he works hard.”
Walker and Cheek played together last month on the U.S. U-18 National Team that won a silver medal in the FIBA Americas U-18 Championship in Argentina.
“I have a great relationship with him now,” Cheek said. “He’s like a brother to me.”
Cheek and his uncle, Omari Knight, are in the process of cutting down his list of potential schools, but Cheek said UConn, Villanova, Tennessee, Wake Forest and Kansas will make the list. He’s planning a visit to UConn soon for an unofficial
“When I make my list they’re definitely going to be one of the top schools,” Cheek said. “They have a great coach, they get people to the league (NBA), and they’re known for making deep runs in the NCAA Tournament.”
Also at the camp were Durand Scott, Tobias Harris and Daniel Orton. The 6-8 Harris, who has a huge list of suitors, did not play because of an injured left thumb.
The 6-10, 260-pound Orton, the No. 2 center in the Class of 2009 out of Oklahoma City (OK) Bishop McGuinness, said his list included UCLA, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, UConn, Ohio State and Kentucky.
“I decided I needed to get up here and visit the campus myself and get a feel for everything,” Orton told Zac Boyer of UConnReport.com
**Here are a couple of other interesting stories off the camp. One on Jim Calhoun and how he’s dealing with radiation treatments for cancer and another on how much Marcus Williams thinks of incoming UConn freshman Kemba Walker.
“That kid is good,” Williams told the Bristol Press. “He’s as talented as they come. He does everything well on the offensive end, he’s patient, he can score, he can break a defense down, set guys up. And not only that, but he plays great pressure defense. If given the opportunity, he may be able to start.”
