  • Matt Coleman Met With Coach K, Focusing on Four Schools

Matt Coleman, the 6-foot-1, 174-pound point guard from Oak Hill (VA) Academy, met this week with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and is focusing on four schools.

Coleman has taken officials to Duke (Sept. 16) and Stanford (Sept. 30) and will next hit Texas the weekend of Oct. 28. His visit to Kansas for this coming weekend was postponed by a scrimmage, and he has no plans to make it up.

“It’s Stanford, Duke, Texas and Kansas,” Coleman said Thursday by phone of the schools on his list. “I will not be taking the Kansas visit this weekend. Time didn’t permit me to. I didn’t reschedule it yet.”

Coach K met with Coleman on Tuesday to show his level of interest.

“His message was like, ‘Matt, you can just trust me,'” Coleman said of the Hall of Fame and Team USA coach. “‘You don’t want to regret this.’ He put a lot of pressure on me but it’s a lot to think about right now.”

Coleman said Duke is making him a priority.

“I wouldn’t say [they want me to] commit but tell them how I feel,” he said. “But right now I’m just gonna let it play out and just wait a little bit longer. No idea when I’m going to commit because I just want to let it come to me, no rush.”

Though Trevon Duval has re-opened his recruitment and is said to be interested in Duke, Coleman said he feels he is still their top priority.

“They told me they’re not recruiting nobody at my position,” Coleman said. “They said Trey Duval called and talked to them last week but Coach K and them told me that I was their priority.”

Coleman previously said Syracuse was focusing on 2017 point guard Quade Green.

“They called and said, ‘No knock to you Matt, but I think we’re going to wait on Quade’ or something like that,” Coleman said.

Meantime, Stanford is in regular touch.

“I hear from Stanford every day,” Coleman said. “Coach Adam [Cohen] and Coach Jerod Haase, I hear from them all the time. So they’re making me feel like a priority right now, too. I took a visit there on the 30th and they put together a real nice visit.”

As for Kansas, “I hear from them every now and then. They hope to get me and Billy [Preston] there as a package deal, so we’ll see how that goes. We could shock the world.”

The 6-10 Preston visited Kansas for “Late Night in the Phog” and is set to visit Syracuse this weekend.

Asked if they were considering other schools as a package, Coleman said, “No, that would be the only won.”

Meantime, Texas is working hard and will host an impressive group of visitors Oct. 28.

Mohamed Bamba’s supposed to be going and I think Jarred Vanderbilt is supposed to be going then too,” Coleman said.

“I like how they’re recruiting me, they’re treating me like a priority. They’re just saying the keys are mine and I’m willing to take them and take them forward to the next level and winning a championship.”

For the season at Oak Hill, Coleman has big goals.

“We’re looking to go back-to-back and get another [Dick’s Nationals] ring,” he said, “going 49-0 or 50-0 and just getting ready to prepare myself to hopefully make the McDonald’s and Jordan Brand Games.”
