Rutgers graduate transfer Nigel Johnson committed to Virginia on Saturday according to ESPN. Johnson was visiting Virginia this weekend.
“Everything was right,” Johnson told ZAGSBLOG. “I heard the right things, it’s a good fit, and I’m home.”
He finished last year averaging 11.3 points per game, as the team’s second leading scorer and will be eligible immediately.
“Another reason [for my decision] is the coaching staff,” said Johnson. “I’ve been very familiar with them since high school. I love the tradition of winning and this is my chance to play and go far in the tournament.” Johnson attended high school at Riverdale Baptist (MD) High School and is originally from Ashburn, Virginia.
Johnson’s transfer comes following the departures of Darius Thompson, Marial Shayok, and Jarred Reuter. Johnson was also considering Nevada, Colorado, and NC State, while also taking a visit to Charlottesville on Friday.
“I’m excited to play in my home state for my state school and to get back to the tournament.” Johnson said.
