One day after getting a verbal pledge from point guard Jordan Walker, Seton Hall added a big man.
Junior college graduate Romaro Gill of Jamaica has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Pirates, the school announced. Gill comes to the Pirates after two years at Vincennes University and has two years of athletic eligibility remaining.
Seton Hall may need a big man, especially if Angel Delgado remains in the NBA Draft. Delgado is testing the NBA Draft waters and worked out for the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday.
“We’re excited to welcome Romaro into the Seton Hall basketball family,” head coach Kevin Willard said. “He is a very big presence in the paint, is a talented shot blocker and has a lot of upside to his game. He was a valuable contributor for one of the best junior college teams in the country, which will help him as he continues his development here at Seton Hall.”
Gill, a 7-foot, 235-pound center, blossomed during his sophomore year at Vincennes, under head coach Todd Franklin. He averaged 5.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game while connecting on 56.2 percent of his field goal attempts. He ranked 10th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in blocked shots (85).
Gill and the Trailblazers went 32-3 and won the Region 16 district championship. The team earned a bid and the No. 7 overall seed into the NJCAA Div. I Men’s Basketball Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals after a win over Northern Oklahoma Enid. Gill was instrumental in the district championship win over Wabash Valley College, delivering 11 points, seven blocks and five rebounds.
“Romaro, first and foremost, is a great person,” said Franklin. “He came to us as raw as a prospect could be, but through his work, his attitude and his talent, he has made major strides, and now I believe can compete at the highest level. It’s going to be exciting watching to see just how good he can become!”
Gill is the fourth signed commit to Seton Hall for 2017-18, joining Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.), Darnell Brodie (Newark, N.J.) and Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia). They all join a potent Pirates squad that returns seven letterwinners that account for 90.5 percent of the team’s scoring and 90.0 percent of the team’s rebounding from 2016-17. Led by Willard, the Pirates are coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons and NCAA Tournament appearances.
