Marcus Bingham Jr., a 6-foot-10 power forward from Grand Rapids (MI) Catholic Central, committed to Michigan State on Friday.
He also considered Purdue, VCU, Pittsburgh, Butler and Xavier.
“Family played a pivotal role in my decision,” Bingham told D1VISION. “The coaching staff connected with my family, which was really important to me. Also, being close to home was big because I want to stay close to my family. At Michigan State, the players and coaching staff interact like a big family, and the players have a brotherhood. I can see myself being a part of that because they all seem to have the same mindset.”
Playing with Spiece Indy Heat on the Nike EYBL, Bingham averaged 8.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game in 16 games. They finished with a 7-9 record, missing out on Peach Jam.
“I feel like I can settle into their offense nicely,” said Bingham. “I’m very versatile, so I’ll be able to do many things for my team like shooting the ball, stretching the floor, and being able to put the ball on the floor when needed. I can play anywhere from a 3 to a 5, so I can fill in the gaps that MSU may have at the time. Coach [Tom] Izzo has compared my game to Adrian Payne, so I can see myself playing that type of role for them as well.”
He joins point guard Foster Loyer and forwards Gabe Brown and Thomas Kithier in Sparty’s 2018 class.
