After saying earlier this month that he remained committed to Arizona “for now,” Jahvon Quinerly announced his decommitment late Thursday night.
The 6-foot-2 Quinerly out of Hudson (N.J.) Catholic initially considered Villanova, Seton Hall, Virginia and Stanford, among others, before choosing Arizona in July. The announcement is the latest blow for Arizona and coach Sean Miller after former assistant Book Richardson was arrested Sept. 26 in the FBI probe into bribery in college basketball. The FBI complaint alleges that Richardson funneled $15,000 to the mother of a “top point guard” who committed “around three days” before Aug. 11. Quinerly, a five-star point guard, announced on ESPNU on Aug. 8 that he would play for to Arizona.” While Arizona has held on to several Class of 2018 commits, other key recruits like R.J. Barrett, Bol Bol and Simi Shittu eliminated the Wildcats from consideration. Now Quinerly has joined them, too. Quinerly told reporters earlier this month he hasn’t spoken with Richardson but has talked to Arizona head coach Sean Miller. “He was upset as well,” Quinerly told ESPN at the USA Basketball minicamp. “We had a brief conversation, and it was about just me becoming the best player I can be for this high school season and being ready for the next level.” He also said he’s hired attorney Alan Milstein to represent him. Milstein has been unavailable for comment. It remains unclear how Quinerly’s high school eligibility will be effected by the case. Hudson Catholic — which also features Ohio State commit Luther Muhammad and Oregon commit Louis King — is considered a favorite to win the New Jersey Tournament of Champions title.
