N.C. State guard Braxton Beverly was denied eligibility after transferring from Ohio State this summer due to the firing of head coach Thad Matta.
N.C. State asked for a waiver of the transfer ruling from the NCAA because Beverly was enrolled in classes at OSU for a short time. On Monday, the school announced the request had been rejected.
“I’m devastated by this decision, it’s incredibly unfair,” Beverly told ESPN. “I appreciate NC State and the work being done here to appeal this decision. My hope is that it gets resolved and I can be eligible to play this season.”
The NCAA transfer rule states: a transfer is required to live in the state for one year before being allowed to play for his new team.
“Disappointed would be an understatement for how I feel for Braxton, he’s devastated.” N.C. State head coach Kevin Keatts said in a release. “This is a situation where adults failed a young man, and he’s the one paying the price.”
A three-star recruit, Beverly never suited up for Ohio State, and now will have to sit out a year before being eligible.
