  • Darius Garland enjoys UCLA visit, will huddle soon with family

Darius Garland, the 6-foot-1 point guard from Brentwood Academy (TN), enjoyed his official visit to UCLA this past weekend and will now huddle with his family about his future plans.

Garland has visited Vanderbilt (Sept. 23-25), Kentucky (Oct. 13-15), Indiana (Oct. 20-22) and UCLA (Oct. 27-29).

“Yeah, we’re done with visits,” his brother, Desmond Nunnery, said by phone. “That was the last one, UCLA. We’ll sit down with the parents and talk about the pros and cons of each school and kind of go from there. I’m not sure, I don’t know if he’s going to do the early signing thing, that’s Nov. 8. We have to kind of sit down and figure it all out maybe Tuesday or Wednesday.”

Nunnery said the UCLA visit went well, and assistant Tyus Edney is coming back Tuesday to see Garland at practice.

“It was a great visit,” he said. “Just L.A., beautiful weather. They said basically he would have the ball in his hands from Day One. Overall it was a great visit.”

Garland visited the same weekend as 7-foot-2 Archbishop Molloy big man Moses Brown, who is considering Florida State, Maryland and UCLA.

“I think Darius and Moses did a lot of talking,” Nunnery said.

As for the other schools, each has its own appeal.

Vanderbilt is the in-state school and got the first official.

“They want him to stay home, be closer to home, be the hometown hero,” Nunnery said. “They haven’t had a recruit as big as Darius, so that would be big thing. The city wants him to stay home in Nashville and be the front runner for the team.”

He visited Kentucky for Big Blue Madness along with Zion Williamson, Bol Bol and James Wiseman. The Wildcats already have Immanuel Quickley in the fold but Garland feels they would complement each other.

“They want him to be the front guy from day one,” Nunnery said. “He’s mainly a point guard, some schools want him to be a two guard. But they say he’ll be a point guard, kind of lead the team because he can score it well and also get everybody else involved. So that was the message from Kentucky.”

Winston Garland, the former NBA player and Darius’ father, grew up in Indiana, where he visited the weekend before UCLA along with shooting guard Romeo Langford.

“Both guys are from Indiana, coming back home to Indiana,” he said. “They would love to have him and Romeo. It was a great visit. They’re trying to get those two, him and Romeo together. That would be a big deal for them. I think they can be really good together. They played in Italy together with Adidas and they did pretty well tighter and that’s where they kind of connected.”
