Louisiana State-bound senior big man Naz Reid is winding down his high school career in grand fashion.
The 6-foot-11 Reid threw down an alley-oop dunk off a pass from Ithiel Horton with 6.3 seconds remaining to give Roselle Catholic a 63-61 victory over Ranney in the New Jersey Non-Public B state title game at Pine Belt Arena.
“I’ve wanted to win my whole life. That’s all I’ve been doing,” Reid, who scored 10 of his 22 points in the second half, told Mike Kinney of NJ.com. “So when I got the chance to make that play, no hesitation; I was gonna do it. I never want to lose a day in my life. I was going to do anything I could to get to the win.”
Roselle Catholic (27-4) figures to be the No. 1 overall seed in the New Jersey Tournament of Champions beginning Tuesday. Under Coach Dave Boff, the Lions previously won in 2013 and ’15.
“We’re not done,” Reid told NJ.com. “We want it more than anyone in the state. We’ll bring it to anyone who comes in our way.”
A McDonald’s All-American, Reid could potentially be one-and-done at LSU.
Bryan Antoine had 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Ranney (28-5).
“It was a big day for Naz, especially for him, down the Shore not too far from where he grew up (Asbury Park),” Boff told NJ.com. “I thought his energy was great and his shots started falling in there when we needed them. That’s a tremendous effort from him in the state championship game.”
