Knicks sign Allonzo Trier to two-year deal, waive Ron Baker

The Knicks have signed undrafted rookie Allonzo Trier to a two-year deal worth $7 million with a team option for the 2019-20 season, a league source told ZAGSBLOG.

The deal starts immediately.

On Thursday afternoon, the Knicks announced the signing, saying that Trier had become the first Two-Way player to sign a guaranteed NBA contract within the first two months of the season.

ZAGSBLOG reported Tuesday that the team was expected to convert Trier to a standard NBA contract from his Two-Way Contract.

On Thursday, the Knicks also waived guard Ron Baker.

Baker, out of Wichita State, appeared in 92 games (14 starts) over three seasons with New York (2016-18), posting averages of 3.3 points, 1.8 assists and 1.5 rebounds over 14.7 minutes. He is averaging 1.3 points and 1.2 assists over 9.7 minutes in 11 games this season. The Scott City, KS native was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent on Aug. 1, 2016, before re-signing on Aug. 7, 2017.

“Ron is a true professional and we thank him for all of his contributions during his time with the Knicks,” said Knicks President Steve Mills. “His dedication and passion for the game are unquestioned and have been truly appreciated by our fans and organization.  We wish him all the best.”

The Knicks are committed to Trier, an undrafed rookie averaging averaging 11.3 points and 3.1 rebounds for the Knicks (8-21). He has scored more than 20 points four times, including a season-high 25 with 8 rebounds and 4 assists against New Orleans on Nov. 23.

“We’ve had some talks about it and it’s something that I’m sure we’ll figure out soon,” Trier told me of his contract situation in October for this Arizona Daily Star feature. “That’s all I can really say. It’s kind of between management and me and my agent and stuff like that.”
