Duke’s Zion Williamson was among five college freshmen named Wednesday to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list, announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The award is presented to the nation’s most outstanding basketball player.
The other freshmen are Duke’s R.J. Barrett, Kentucky’s Keldon Johnson, Michigan’s Iggy Brazdeikis and Indiana’s Romeo Langford.
The Big Ten leads all conferences with seven players while the ACC has five.
The Big East has three players in St. John’s junior Shamorie Ponds, Seton Hall junior Myles Powell and Marquette Markus Howard.
Three Canadians made the list in Barrett, Brazdeikis and Virginia Tech’s Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts, the midseason list is comprised of 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport’s most prestigious honor, based on their performances during the first half of the 2018-19 season.
The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2019 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy’s during the ESPN College Basketball Awards on April 12.
