UNC’s Roy Williams, Hubert Davis watch Precious Achiuwa

Hours after North Carolina beat Miami in overtime, head coach Roy Williams and assistant Hubert Davis appeared courtside at Kean University in New Jersey to watch Precious Achiuwa.

The Montverde-Roselle Catholic game ended in a brawl, but Achiuwa did not appear to be directly involved and Williams and Davis left just before the melee occurred.

Williams has been tracking the 6-foot-9 Achiuwa for some time now, and recently offered him a scholarship. He saw him at Montverde Academy’s tournament last month.

A year ago, Williams and Davis also ventured to Kean to watch Achiuwa, then at St. Benedict’s Prep, play against Hudson Catholic.

Achiuwa, whose older brother, God’sgift Achiuwa played for former St. John’s coach Steve Lavin, is also being courted by St. John’s, UConn and Kansas.

Chris Mullin and the St. John’s staff were on hand Friday night when Achiuwa went for 13 points and 6 rebounds as Montverde Academy, No. 4 in the USA Today poll, destroyed No. 11 Ranney, 89-51, before a capacity crowd.

After Saturday’s game, Montverde will have about two months off before the GEICO High School Nationals at Christ the King in April. Achiuwa plans to take some officials then.

“Yeah, I’m going to take a couple visits between now and GEICO,” he said. “Those visits have not been set, I don’t know where I’m visiting so I have to sit with my family about where and when we’re going to take those visits.”
