Niels Lane, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound Freehold, N.J. native from Roselle (N.J.) Catholic and Team Final, met with the staffs of Florida and Miami on Tuesday at his high school as his recruitment heats up.
Florida went four deep with head coach Mike White and three assistants and met with Lane at Roselle Catholic, while Miami coach Jim Larranaga and assistant Adam Fisher also met with him at the school. Lane is coming off an official visit to Florida last weekend and trips to Miami Thursday ahead of his Texas visit the following weekend.
“[Florida] reiterated their interest from Sunday at the conclusion of the visit and [their] calls on Monday,” Rod Lane, Niels’ father, said. “Just that he’s a priority,. They love his versatility and feel he will be a great fit. They will be back next week with Coach White and three assistants.”
As for Miami’s message: “Pretty much the same as Florida’s. They came up to show support, and reiterate how much they want to coach him. They have a great visit planned and can’t wait to get him on campus. He’s exactly what they’re looking for and his versatility is what sets him apart.”
Texas and UConn both had assistants at his open gym Tuesday.
“Niels is just scratching the surface of what he can be,” RC coach Dave Boff said. “He’s very skilled, can defend and plays with great energy. That’s a rare combination. Guys like that are special players.”.
Wherever he goes, Lane plans to be a “high-energy guy on both ends of the floor.”
“I take a lot of pride in my defense, I consider myself a lock-down defender,” he said. “I can also score the ball. I’m a good shooter. I still have room to improve on my jump shot, but I feel like my jump shot’s pretty good. And I think I can lead a team. I think I have pretty good leadership skills.”
