Iona got a double-dose of good news on Wednesday.
Mo Thiam and Isaiah Washington both received legislative relief waivers from the NCAA and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference allowing them to be immediately eligible for the upcoming 2019-20 season.
“We’re thrilled to have Mo and Isaiah available this season,” said head coach Tim Cluess. “They have both worked hard this summer and fall and will be an integral part of the success of the program this season.”
Thiam will be a senior and Washington a junior for the Gaels this season.
The 6-foot-9 Thiam appeared in 25 games last season at New Mexico State, averaging 4.5 points and 3.8 rebounds. He saw decreased playing time toward the end of the season and only played only five total minutes in New Mexico State’s final two conference tournament games. He didn’t play at all in their NCAA Tournament first round loss to Auburn.
The 6-foot Washington played for Richard Pitino at Minnesota for the past two seasons. His career averages were 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds. His most notable game came Nov. 30 in a win over Oklahoma State where he scored 15 points and dished out 4 assists.
The creator of “Jelly Fam” is known to be a smooth guard who controls the pace of the game and likes to play up-tempo, which Iona is known for.
