Less than three weeks after announcing their second COVID shutdown on Dec. 29, Iona went into its third pause on Saturday due to a positive COVID result among Tier-1 personnel.
The Gaels now join Villanova and DePaul among schools with at least three COVID pauses this season.
Iona (5-3, 3-1 MAAC) started its season late due to its first COVID pause and didn’t begin the season until Nov. 30 in a loss to Seton Hall. They last played in a Dec. 23 win over Coppin State, two days before Christmas.
They were slated to play Saint Peter’s Sunday and Monday in New Rochelle but those games have been postponed.
Pitino said before the season began he supported pushing the start of the season back until March and having “May Madness” for the NCAA Tournament.
