This has been quite the week for the Champagnie twins from Brooklyn.
Julian Champagnie, a sophomore at St. John’s, was named the Big East Player of the Week on Monday, while Justin Champagnie, a sophomore at Pittsburgh, was named the co-Player of the Week in the ACC.
Julian averaged 19.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week, while posting game-high scoring totals in each game. The sophomore forward scored 18 points in a 69-57 win over Butler and followed that with a 20-point effort in a 73-71 loss to Marquette. Champagnie ranks first in the Big East in scoring with a 20.7 average.
Justin Champagnie scored 24 points and pulled down 16 rebounds Saturday in Pitt’s 96-76 triumph over Syracuse. Returning to action for the first time since suffering a knee injury Dec. 20, he recorded his fourth double-double and fourth 20-10 game of the season. Champagnie was expected to miss 6-8 weeks following the knee injury but returned after missing four weeks and just two games. He finished the game 9-of-18 from the field and 6-of-7 from the foul line, as the Panthers completed the regular-season sweep of Syracuse.
Trailing by five at the half, Pitt outscored the Orange 64-39 in the second half as Champagnie posted 18 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks after intermission. Champagnie (18.7 ppg, 12.9 rpg) is the only player in the NCAA averaging at least 18 points and 12 rebounds per game this season.
