If you enjoyed Thursday’s thrilling game between Syracuse and UConn in the Bahamas, there is good news.
The two schools are talking about a series that would revive the old-school Big East rivalry as soon as the 2017-18 season, according to the Syracuse Post-Standard.
“I think there’s a reasonable likelihood that we will play Connecticut again someday soon,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told the paper following his team’s thrilling 79-76 win in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals on Thursday that set up Friday’s championship showdown with Texas A&M, who upset No. 10 Gonzaga.
“It’s something that we’re definitely looking at,” UConn coach Kevin Ollie said. “It would be a great thing. It’s a great rivalry.”
In the last two years, Syracuse played former Big East rivals St. John’s and Villanova, and the Orange also begin a new series with St. John’s on Dec. 13 at Madison Square Garden. Both Syracuse and UConn will also play Georgetown in non-conference games next month. Syracuse visits the Hoyas Dec. 5, while the Huskies host Georgetown in Hartford Dec. 23.
Now a Syracuse-UConn series could be next.
“We’re going to do what’s best for UConn,” Ollie said. “We’re going to schedule the guys we need to schedule to make an impact on our season. These are two great programs with a great history. They’ve played some great games. I think it would definitely be beneficial for both teams.”
