NEW YORK — Kyrie Irving announced that he had cut his list of potential colleges to six schools in an exclusive video interview Thursday with SNY.tv.
“It didn’t come down to five, it came down to six schools and the six schools are Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Seton Hall and UConn,” said Irving, a 6-foot-1 point guard out of Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick ranked No. 9 in the Class of 2010 by Rivals.
Irving had previously said he would take officials to Indiana and Duke. He has not sets dates for visits to those or the other schools yet.
“Duke and Indiana are definites,” he said, “but I don’t have definite dates for them yet. But those are definitely two schools that I’m going to give officials to.”
Many people figure that Irving will ultimately choose between Indiana and Duke, and Irving confirmed that he has a strong bond with both programs.
As for Indiana, he said: “I have a great relationship with all the coaches, the whole coaching staff starting with Coach [Tom] Crean and it just trickles down to the assistant coaches. To Coach [Tim] Buckley and coach [Roshown] McLeod, I have great relationships with them.
“Every week I’m pretty much talking to Indiana.”
As for Duke, Irving said: “Coach K [Mike Krzyzewski], his name itself, that’s just a big name. It’s a big-time school. And I think everybody dreams about having either North Carolina or Duke on their list, and I have the luxury of having Duke. So I wouldn’t want any other way with Coach K. I have a great relationship with him.”
Kentucky remains in the picture and has the advantage of having Irving’s uncle and Godfather, former Knick point guard Rod Strickland, on staff. Still, Irving has said he views Kentucky as just another school in the recruiting process.
Big East schools Seton Hall and UConn have hung around, with St. Patrick coach Kevin Boyle saying Seton Hall could wind up landing Irving when it’s all said and done.
“Seton Hall is a little bit on the outside, but they keep working, keep working,” Boyle said. “They might end up getting him at the end. Seton Hall’s worked tremendously hard on a consistent basis and who knows? Maybe all their hard work will pay off.”
“I went to Seton Hall unofficially a couple months back, before the summer,” Irving said. “Other than that, I’ve only been to Texas A&M and Indiana. I’ve been to Indiana twice unofficially.”
