Brandon Knight, the No. 1 prospect in the Rivals150 for the Class of 2010, has narrowed his list to a top five, according to an interview his mother, Turgenia, gave to Dustin Rumbaugh of Kentuckysportsradio.com.
“Brandon’s top five are UConn, Kentucky, Kansas, Miami and Florida,” she said.
She added that Knight would have an in-home visit with Kentucky coach John Calipari and his staff in mid-September and also take an official to campus then.
Kentucky is involved with nearly every top point guard in the nation, including Knight, Cory Joseph, Joe Jackson and Kyrie Irving, as well as combo guards Doron Lamb and Josh Selby.
“They’re recruiting me, so I’m definitely considering Kentucky,” Knight, out of Ft Lauderdale (FL) Pine Crest, told me earlier this month.
A source said Kansas is also working on setting up an in-home.
Knight said he wants to be a floor general when he gets to college.“Just a leader, a guy who can run the team and try to be the coach on the floor,” he said.
PINKSTON, COLLIER UPDATES I spoke today with New Heights AD Kimani Young and he confirmed that 6-7 St. Anthony forward Devon Collier visited Providence Friday. If I can get an update, I’ll post it. Also, 6-6 forward JayVaughn Pinkston of Brooklyn Bishop Loughlin will leave Friday for the Marquette Elite Camp. He visited St. John’s unofficially last week and has also tripped to Tennessee and Villanova this summer. Cory Joseph of Findlay (Nev.) Prep visited Villanova Saturday and is at UConn today. I had the honor of having a late-night snack with Five-Star founder Howard Garfinkel, Jon Segal of ESPN Rise and John Marion of Seton Hall at the Carnegie Deli in Manhattan after the Boost Mobile game.
Garf told us he attended arguably the three greatest sporting events of the 20th century: Bobby Thomson’s 1951 home run at the Polo Fields. “The Giants win the pennant, the Giants win the pennant.”; the 1958 NFL championship game between the Giants and Colts at Yankee Stadium, often called “The Greatest Game Ever Played”; and Christian Laettner’s game-winning turnaround shot for Duke against Kentucky in the 1992 NCAA Tournament.
Garf is hosting “The Clinic to End All Clinics II” on Oct. 3 at Manhattan College featuring Don Casey, Mike Fratello, Leonard Hamilton, Bob Knight and Roy Williams.
Speaking of Knight, Indiana will induct him into its athletics Hall of Fame on Nov. 6. Knight was fired from IU for violating the school’s zero-tolerance policy imposed by Myles Brand, the school’s then president.
It remains unclear if Knight, who posted a record of 662-239 from 1971-2000 at IU, will attend.
