For the second year in a row, Gonzaga will be the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament as it looks to become the first AP No. 1 team since 2012 to win a championship and redeem itself after last year’s national title game defeat.
The Zags are joined by Arizona (South Region), Kansas (Midwest Region) and Baylor (East Region) as fellow No. 1 seeds.
This is the fifth time that Gonzaga has earned a No. 1 seed under head coach Mark Few as he looks to take home the program’s first-ever national title.
“It’s been great. It was a great learning experience. Obviously things didn’t go as we wanted it to last year, but it’s allowed for a lot of growth,” Gonzaga junior forward Drew Timme said on ESPN during the Selection Sunday program. “We’re excited for the challenge ahead.”
The Zags could potentially face fellow No. 1 seed Arizona in the finals, which would pit few against ex-Gonzaga assistant and current Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd.
The last four teams to make the bracket were Indiana (20-13), Notre Dame (22-10), Rutgers (18-13) and Wyoming (25-8), while Dayton (23-10), Oklahoma (18-15), SMU (23-8) and Texas A&M (23-12) were the first four out.
