Adam Zagoria is a Basketball Insider who covers basketball at all levels. A contributor to The New York Times and SportsNet New York (SNY), he is also the author of two books and is an award-winning journalist and filmmaker. NEW YORK — Marin Cilic has pulled off the biggest upset in the men’s draw at this year’s U.S. Open.
A 20-year-old from Zagreb, Croatia who had never advanced past the round of 16 at a major, Cilic sent No. 2 seed Andy Murray of Scotland packing in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2, in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Murray, who entered with a 3-0 career mark against Cilic, was the runner-up to Roger Federer last year and was considered a contender to win it all this year. John McEnroe predicted before the tournament that either Murray or American Andy Roddick would win the Open. Both are now out.
