Highly coveted South Dakota State transfer Baylor Scheierman is staying home in Nebraska to play for Creighton.
The 6-foot-6 sophomore from Aurora, NE on Tuesday chose the Bluejays over Arkansas, Clemson, Duke and Nebraska.
“I decided to commit to Creighton because I really like how they play,” Scheierman told ESPN. “They are an unselfish team who really share the ball and that’s what I’m used to and I enjoy playing that way. They also let their guys play free and loose and I feel like I play my best in that type of system.
“They have a great group of guys coming back that are very talented and know how to play the right way and I think us together can do something special. Also, the opportunity to come home was an offer I couldn’t resist.”
He previously cut Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Texas and Wake Forest. “I want to put myself in the best position to improve my pro aspirations,” he told Omaha.com. He was also invited to the NBA G League Elite Camp later this month in Chicago, his agent Austin Walton confirmed. The reigning Summit League player of the year, Scheierman averaged 16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 51 percent from the field and 47 percent from deep this past season for a Jackrabbits team that won 21 straight games before losing to Providence in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Scheierman led the Jackrabbits (30-6) with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Creighton, which lost to Villanova in the Big East Tournament title game in March, should again be a major factor in the Big East and nationally with the addition of Scheierman to join forces with Ryan Nembhard, Trey Alexander, Arthur Kaluma and Big East Defensive Player of the Year Ryan Kalkbrenner. The Bluejays also bring in point guard Ben Shtolzberg, power forward Jasen Green and big man Fredrick King. This post was updated at 10 a.m. on May 3.
