NEW YORK — Roger Federer kept topping himself with crowd-pleasing artistry on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court, but one shot will be remembered as perhaps his greatest ever.
After Novak Djokovic lifted a soft lob over Federer’s head, Federer retreated toward the baseline and calmly smacked a between-the-legs shot that sailed past Djokovic at net and into the open court for a winner.
A crowd including Jack Nicholson, Justin Timberlake and Gwen Stefani let out a roar of excitement, and Djokovic could only shrug his shoulders and smile.
