The Longhorns’ season may have ended on Sunday, but their leader is expected to get a new contract.

According to a report by 247Sports, Rodney Terry is expected to be hired as Texas’ full-time head coach. Texas went 22-8 under Terry, won the Big 12 Tournament, and reached the Elite Eight.

ESPN’s Jeff Borzello reported that Terry and Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte were expected to meet on Monday and discuss Terry’s future with the team.

Terry took over on Dec. 12 after Chris Beard was suspended and eventually fired. The 54-year-old became the interim coach in January and led the Longhorns to their most successful season with 29 wins.

Beard was charged with felony assault against his fiancee, but the charge was later dropped. Ole Miss has since hired Beard as its head coach.

This is Terry’s second stint with Texas. From 2002 to 2011 he was an assistant coach before he led Fresno State from 2011 to 2018. He then was the head coach at UTEP from 2018 to 2021 before he returned to Texas.

Terry told reporters this week that his role as an associate head coach helped him take over as head coach after Beard was removed.

“I was more of a co-coach with Beard,” Terry said. “That allowed me to be in front of these guys, working with them on defense, building those relationships with individual players. So when I needed to take on a bigger role, they were already used to me being in front of them.”
