Jeffrey Akintolu, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward from Avon Old Farms (CT) who is originally from England, has become the first commit for new NJIT coach Grant Billmeier.

“My goal throughout my career was to play at a school with terrific academics, in a competitive league, a chance at the NCAA Tournament, and for a coach that believes in me and I believe in him,” he said. “All of that came together perfectly at NJIT.

“In terms of skillset, I’d say I work hard to help my team with my shooting ability, guarding multiple positions, and rebounding.”

He averaged 13 points and 8.2 rebounds last season.

“I am really happy for Jeffrey Akintolu,” his high school coach Matt Mihalic said. “He has worked tirelessly toward an opportunity like this. He brought so much to Avon Old Farms on the court and in the classroom. He has an incredible maturity that made him a natural leader, and his work ethic was incredible. He’s got a competitive demeanor, but he was positive and enthusiastic. He led us in total made 3’s, and charges taken.

“He chose a terrific mentor in Coach Billmeier, who not only develops skilled forwards like Jeff, but Grant also has an incredible track record for surrounding himself with great people and guiding young men towards success. I’m excited for NJIT!”

During his introductory press conference last week, Billmeier said he would target a mix of high school recruits and transfers after taking over a roster with just six players.

“I’m not promising you we’re going to win championships,” he said. “But I’m promising you there will never be a team more prepared.”
