Hammond is 62-9 in the last four years with six championships. Said PVI head coach Glen Farello: “Ben is in a long line of great point guards to come out of PVI and he’s a winner. He’s tough, he’s competitive, he’s a point guard that can score and knows how to run a team. “He plays with a chip on his shoulder.” Hammond joins Duke-bound wing Darren Harris among committed PVI players. Four-star wing Isaiah Abraham is down to four schools and is expected to announce in July, while four-star big man Pat Ngongba may wait until the fall. Ben Hammond, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound point guard from Paul VI Catholic (VA) and Team Takeover, has committed to Rhode Island, he told ZAGSBLOG.
The three-star guard also considered College of Charleston, George Mason, Mount St. Mary’s, Fairfield, Towson and Fordham
“I’ll be going to the University of Rhode Island,” he said by phone ahead of his public announcement.
“I felt like I fit well in the organization and just the whole culture. The offense that they run, they way that they play, I feel like that matched my style of play and how I want to play at the college level and how I’ve been playing all my life, so I felt it was a great fit.
“And I have great connection with the coaching staff, Kenny [Johnson] and Archie [Miller] and it felt like home.”
