Oregon and Washington, charter members of the Pac-12 conference dating back to 1915, have officially joined the Big Ten Conference, bringing that league to 18 teams beginning on Aug. 2, 2024.
The 18-team mega-league will the largest in college football history.
Oregon and Washington are the third and fourth Pac-12 teams to join the Big Ten ahead of the 2024 season, following UCLA and USC. The Pac-12 now has just four teams left in Cal, Stanford, Washington State and Oregon State, with the latter two candidates for the Mountain West Conference. It’s unclear if Cal and Stanford will join the Big Ten at a later date. If so, that conference would expand to 20 schools.
“We are excited to welcome the University of Oregon and the University of Washington to the Big Ten Conference,” Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti said in a statement. “We look forward to building long-lasting relationships with the universities, administrators and staff, student-athletes, coaches and fans,” Petitti said. “Both institutions feature a combination of academic and athletic excellence that will prove a great fit for our future.”
