As sure as night follows day, the Pac-12 is losing basketball recruits as the conference collapses.
Two Pac-12 commits announced Sunday their plans to decommit and re-open their recruitments: Adam Njie from Washington State and Portland transfer Michael Meadows from Cal-Berkeley.
The 6-foot-2 Njie, out of Cardinal Hayes in The Bronx, committed to Washington State in May but said the turmoil around the Pac-12 caused him to decommit.
“Yes,” he said by text.
He has already heard from Alabama, Arizona State and Miami.
Meantime, Meadows told Tobias Bass of The Athletic he is de-committing after announcing his transfer in May.
With the Pac-12 now reduced to four teams beginning in 2024 — Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State — it would not be surprising to see more players decommit or reevaluate their recruiting plans relating to those schools. During a tumultuous few days on the college landscape, the Pac-12 last week saw Oregon and Washington defect to the Big Ten beginning in 2024 after USC and UCLA had previously announced their plans to go to that conference. Four other Pac-12 schools, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah, will head to the Big 12 beginning next year. “To think even remotely, five years ago, the Pac-12 would be in this position, it’s unthinkable to think that we’re here today,” Washington State football Coach Jake Dickert told reporters after his team’s practice on Thursday.
