Bill Self has amended his lifetime contract with Kansas, making him the highest-paid coach in college basketball.
It is a $44.5 million contract over five years. The Average Annual Value is $8.9 million that includes a total $5 million retention bonus when he reaches the end of the fifth year.
That salary puts Self ahead of John Calipari as the highest paid coach in college hoops, with Calipari’s contract worth an estimated $8.6 million per year.
“Bill Self is undoubtedly the most consistent coach in college basketball, and a restructuring of his contract terms were long overdue,” KU Director of Athletics Travis Goff said. “In an ever-changing collegiate athletics environment, our strong commitment to coach Self positions KU basketball to maintain and enhance its status as the most storied program in the country.”
Self — entering his 20th season at Kansas — has amassed two national titles, 16 conference titles and 18 first round draft picks while coaching the Jayhawks. He’s also been awarded National Coach of the Year four times.
“I am very appreciative to Chancellor (Douglas) Girod, Travis Goff and the entire KU leadership team for their continued belief and confidence in me and my staff to lead this storied program,” Self said. “I know the Chancellor and Travis are as excited as I am about the future of Kansas Basketball.”
Self continued: “There has never been a better time to be a part of our athletic department and this program. My family and I are so proud to be at this university, and I am looking forward to many more seasons representing the most passionate fan base in the country. There’s no place like Kansas.”
