Big Ten, Big East tie in final Gavitt Games

The Gavitt Tipoff Games have been an annual series of 8 games between Big East and Big Ten teams, taking place at the beginning of the college basketball season since 2015.

The first three years ended in 4-4 ties; since then the Big Ten has won three of the last four years (games were canceled in 2020 due to covid). 

This year’s games also ended in a tie, perhaps fittingly.

Monday

Michigan 89, St. John’s 73

St. John’s lost its Madison Square Garden debut in the Rick Pitino era 89-73 to Michigan in a Gavitt Tipoff Games contest. The Wolverines used a late run in the first half to lead 48-38 at halftime and maintained their double-digit advantage the rest of the way. Dug McDaniel dominated St. John’s with 26 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds while Nimari Burnett added 21, all in the first half. The Johnnies’ Joel Soriano had 15 points, nine rebounds and went over the 1,000-point career scoring mark.

No. 2 Purdue 83, No. 13 Xavier 71

Xavier hung in at No. 2 Purdue, but could not prevail in an 83-71 victory for the homestanding Boilermakers in the Gavitt Tipoff Games. Zach Edey went for 28 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks in the win. Demond Claude scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half. He also dished six assists.

Tuesday

Providence 72, Wisconsin 59

(AP) – Devin Carter scored 21 points, Bryce Hopkins added 16 points and Providence beat Wisconsin 72-59 on Tuesday night in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.

The Friars moved to 5-1 all-time against the Badgers, including a 58-57 victory on Dec. 11, 1995 in the last game of the series played in Providence.

No. 4 Marquette 71, No. 23 Illinois 64

(AP) – Tyler Kolek shook off an ankle injury to score 24 points and No. 4 Marquette beat No. 23 Illinois 71-64 on Tuesday night.

The reigning Big East player of the year, Kolek added six rebounds and four assists. Kam Jones scored 15 for the Golden Eagles (3-0), and Oso Ighodaro had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Kolek turned his ankle in Friday night’s 95-65 win over Rider and left the court with just under eight minutes left. He did not return.

No. 8 Creighton 92, Iowa 84

(AP) – Creighton’s offense was in a lull to end the first half against Iowa. The eighth-ranked Bluejays were unstoppable to start the second.

They made 10 straight shots and 15 of their first 17 coming out of halftime, quickly turned a tie into a 17-point lead and held off the Hawkeyes 92-84 Tuesday night.

Trey Alexander narrowly missed a triple-double with 23 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, and four other Creighton players scored in double figures.

Wednesday

Rutgers 71, Georgetown 60

(AP) – Derek Simpson scored 15 points and Rutgers used a strong defense to defeat Georgetown 71-60 on Wednesday night.

The Scarlet Knights (3-1) had an 11-0 run early in the second half, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Aundre Hyatt, for a 54-36 lead and the Hoyas (1-2) never got closer than 11.

Friday

No. 18 Michigan St 74, Butler 75

Tyson Walker scored 21 points, including 16 in the first half, and A.J. Hoggard added 14 on Friday night to lead No. 18 Michigan State to a 74-54 victory over Butler.

Jahmyl Telfort scored a team-high 15 points for Butler.

No. 21 Villanova 57, Maryland 40

After being criticized for a loss to Big 5 rival Penn, Villanova coach Kyle Neptune coached his team to a rout of Maryland.

Villanova’s advantage grew to 31 points in the second half. Tyler Burton led the Wildcats (3-1) with 15 points. TJ Bamba added 11. Villanova stifled Maryland by holding the Terps to 24 percent (12-50) shooting from the field
