Five-star wing Tre Johnson has committed to Texas.
The 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Link Academy (MO) chose Texas over in-state rival Baylor after previously trimming Kentucky, Kansas, Alabama and Arkansas from his list.
“I chose Texas because I like their family culture and my relationship with the coaching staff,” he told On3.com.
Johnson said his relationship with head coach Rodney Terry helped cement the deal. “We have a great relationship,” he said. “I feel I can be myself around them and I feel they would push me and help better myself.” He joins shooting guard Cam Scott and power forward Nic Codie in Texas’ 2024 class. He is also the latest player from Link Academy to commit in 2024. “Tre is a scoring combo guard with great size, length and athleticism,” Link Academy coach Bill Armstrong told ZAGSBLOG. “He can score at all three levels and has very good instincts as a passer when playing the point guard position. He’s an extremely hard worker and an ultra competitor who competes to win every possession on both ends of the floor. As a junior in 2022-23, Johnson averaged 21.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while leading Lake Highlands to a 34-3 record and the UIL Class 6A state championship. The National Junior of the Year by MaxPreps and Mr. Basketball in the state of Texas last year, he converted 53-percent from the floor, including a 42-percent mark from three-point range, and 91-percent from the free throw line as a junior. Johnson surpassed the 2,000-career point mark during the quarterfinals of the state tournament last year and recorded a game-high 29 points in his team’s 55-44 victory over Beaumont United in the Class 6A state title game. Lake Highlands won its first state championship in boys’ basketball since 1968. During his sophomore season in 2021-22, Johnson averaged 23.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while leading Lake Highlands to a 33-5 record and the regional quarterfinals of the Class 6A state tournament.
