NEW YORK — Tre Johnson, the No. 4 overall senior and Texas commit, asserted himself as one of the best guards in the nation at Saturday’s Jordan Brand Classic via MadeHoops.

The 6-foot-6 Link Academy (MO.) product dropped 25 points while shooting 7-of-11 from deep. He tallied 4 assists as Link dominated Penn Charter (PA.) 89-55.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he led the SEC in scoring next year,” head coach Billy Armstrong said postgame. “I think he’s going to be one of the best scorers in the country.”

Armstrong also hit on Johnson’s all-around game, saying he can provide more than just scoring.

“I think he’s going to be a combo guard that scores,” he said. “He’s an underrated passer, and he’s a willing passer. I think he doesn’t get enough credit for that, but it will open up a lot of things for him and his ability to score.”

For Johnson, he’s ready to do whatever it takes to win at Texas.

“I’m just willing to do whatever it takes to win,” he said. “If I need to score, if that’s what we need, then that’s what I’ll do.”

Johnson said he and the other two Texas commits, four-stars Nic Codie and Cam Scott, are starting to build a relationship off the court.

“We’ve been in touch, and we text pretty much every other day,” Johnson said. “We are just building that connection and that relationship.”
