DePaul fired coach Tony Stubblefield last month and Matt Brady, a New Jersey native, is now the interim head coach. Among the names linked to the job are Bobby Hurley, the Jersey City native and former Duke star who now coaches Arizona State. During the UConn game, some DePaul fans apparently directed some comments to Huskies coach Dan Hurley about his brother’s potential future with the Spartans. “I don’t have any thoughts on that,” Hurley told reporters about the rumors of his brother. “Couple of people yelled something maybe on the way out relative to that … Did he win tonight? Hopefully he won tonight, played Oregon State at home. I know that’s what he’s thinking about.” With their win over Oregon State, Bobby Hurley has Arizona State at 13-12, 7-7 in the Pac-12. Some folks on Twitter have suggested that the Big East dump DePaul in favor of Dayton, which is 20-4, 10-2 in the Atlantic 10. But that seems highly unlikely for a number of reasons, including the fact that Xavier and Dayton are only about an hour away from one another. DePaul is threatening to make history in the Big East Conference — and not in a good way.
With their 101-65 loss to No. 1 UConn on Wednesday night, DePaul fell to 3-21 (with a win over Louisville), 0-13 in league play this season.
Overall, the Blue Demons have lost 25 straight Big East regular-season games. Georgetown owns the record with 29, a streak that ended in January 2023.
No team has ever gone 0-20 in the Big East — Georgetown owns the mark for futility with an 0-19 campaign in 2021-22 when one game was cancelled due to COVID — but this DePaul teams looks like they can do it.
Here are there seven remaining regular-season games, including a season finale at Seton Hall:
Feb. 17 – at Providence
Feb. 21 – at No. 4 Marquette
Feb. 24 – vs. Georgetown
Feb. 28 – at Xavier
March 2 – vs. Butler
March 5 – vs. St. John’s
March 9 – at Seton Hall
DePaul’s best bet is the Georgetown game at home on Feb. 24.
Under first-year coach Ed Cooley, who left Providence for the Hoyas before this season, Georgetown is 1-12 in the Big East with their lone win coming over, you guessed it, DePaul on Jan. 6 by the narrow margin of 68-65.
