North Texas transfer Aaron Scott is the newest member of the St. John’s Red Storm.
The 6-foot-7, 200-pound junior forward from Spring, Texas chose St. John’s over Oklahoma, Memphis and Arizona State, he told ZAGSBLOG.
When St. John’s beat North Texas, 53-52, in November, Scott went for 13 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists
“We are super excited to have Aaron in our program,” said Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Rick Pitino. “We competed against him this past year and know him extremely well. He is a multidimensional forward who brings a lot to our team from the offensive and defensive end.”
St. John’s on Tuesday picked up a pledge from USC transfer big man Vince Iwuchukwu and now adds Scott to the fold.
“The coaching staff been on me since my first day in the portal,” he said in a phone interview. “They’ve been showing love throughout this whole process. When I got on campus, it just felt like family.”
He averaged 11.0 points and 5.6 rebounds last season.
Asked what role he will be playing for Rick Pitino’s team, he said, “Kind of like [Chris] Ledlum a little bit, switch on the perimeter, guard on the perimeter, score on the perimeter, just being able to play my game.” Scott believes he will develop under the Hall of Famer Pitino. “I think I will develop so much, tremendously,” he said. “I think I’ll be able to eventually play at the next level. I think Coach Pitino will do all that he can to help me get to that level.” As for his goals next season, “I’m trying to go to the [NCAA] Tournament because when you’re in the tournament, who knows what can happen?
