UConn Duo Cleared to Play; RU’s N’Diaye Injured; NIA Prep Invitational
UConn senior guard Jerome Dyson and junior guard Donnell Beverly were both cleared for full participation in practice and outside competition, the university announced Friday.
Freshman Jamal Coombs-McDaniel has been also been cleared to participate in practices, but the NCAA has not granted him full eligibility.
All three sat out Wednesday’s exhibition when No. 12 UConn downed American International College, 106-67, “due to pending evaluation of recently submitted paperwork pertaining to their eligibility certification,” the university said.
The team had just seven scholarship players available for that game.
Dyson (pictured courtesy CNN.SI) hasn’t played since going down with a knee injury Feb. 11. He was named to the All-Big East preseason second team.
The Huskies continue to be without backup center Jonathan Mandelove, who is reportedly out for academic reasons.
Ater Majok, a 6-10 center originally from the Sudan, is practicing with the team and will be eligible to play his first game Dec. 20 against Central Florida.
“At 6-10 with a 7-foot-7 reach, he’s going to make a major splash in our league,” head coach Jim Calhoun said.
RU’S NDIAYE INJURED
Rutgers senior center Hamady N’Diaye will be out 7-10 days with a hyperextended right knee suffered during a recent secret scrimmage with Iona. Surgery is not required.
N’Diaye could return for the Rutgers season opener Nov. 14 against Marist at the RAC.
The news was first reported on Scarletnation.com.
The Rutgers sports information department had no immediate comment.
Also, 6-8 center Gil Biruta of St. Benedict’s and Lithuania will now visit Rutgers next weekend (Nov. 14-15), not this one.
