Tubby Smith has agreed to become the new head coach at Memphis, according to a report from Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com.
Smith, 64, will take over for Josh Pastner, who left to take the Georgia Tech job.
Smith’s deal at Memphis is for five years and worth $15.45 million, Parrish reported.
Smith has a career record of 557-276 (.669) including a 46-50 record in the last three years at Texas Tech. He guided the Red Raiders to a 19-13 record, 9-9 in the Big 12, and an NCAA Tournament bid this year.
At Memphis, he has a chance to compete for the American Athletic Conference title every year along with fellow league powers UConn, SMU and Temple. Memphis finished 19-15, 8-10 in the American this past season under Pastner.
Smith is the third new coach in the American this offseason, following Mike Dunleavy Sr. (Tulane) and Johnny Dawkins (UCF).
Smith is one of two coaches to lead five programs to the NCAA Tournament. He won an NCAA championship at Kentucky in 1998, where he coached from 1997-2007. He also led Minnesota to the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
