High-flying former UNLV wing Derrick Jones has been training every day for his upcoming NBA workouts.
The 6-foot-7 Chester, Pa., native has workouts with the Brooklyn Nets, Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Lakers beginning May 18, a source told SNY.tv.
Jones, who averaged 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in his lone season with the Runnin’ Rebels, was not invited to next week’s NBA Combine in Chicago, but is one of many players who declared for the draft who is undergoing workouts. Kentucky’s Isaiah Briscoe, San Diego State’s Malik Pope, Xavier’s Trevon Bluiett and Indiana’s Yogi Ferrell are just some of the other players not invited to the Combine who are going through workouts.
Jones signed with agent Aaron Turner after he was declared ineligible in early March after his test score was cancelled by the ACT and his attorney said the move was racially motivated.
Turner also handles former St. John’s big man Chris Obekpa, former Louisville guard Trey Lewis, former Baylor forward Taurean Prince, former LSU guard Tim Quarterman and former West Virginia forward Devin Williams.
Jones developed a reputation as one of the most exciting dunkers in the nation during high school and his time at UNLV, winning several dunk contests along the way.
