Gilchrist Injures Knee; Hall to Offer Mack (UPDATED)
Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick junior wing Michael Gilchrist injured his right knee during Tuesday night’s 62-46 victory over Union and was taken to the emergency room.
Gilchrist was trying to get an MRI on Wednesday, a source said.
Gilchrist took a pass and cut to the basket and then his knee collided with that of a defender.
“It looked like a knee-on-knee thing. Hopefully it wasn’t too serious,” a source said. “Hopefully it’s something muscular and nothing more serious.”
The 6-foot-7 Gilchrist is the No. 1 junior in the nation and is widely regarded as the top high school player in the country. He averaged 14.9 points and 8.3 rebounds last season as the Celtics won the New Jersey Tournament of Champions.
Kentucky and Villanova lead for his services but other schools, including Rutgers, Michigan and UConn, are involved as well.
“From the times I’ve seen him play, he’s got a very bright future,” said Knicks forward and former St. Pat’s star Al Harrington.
Asked if Gilchrist could play in the NBA, Harrington said with a smile: “Of course, St. Pat’s, that all we do is produce NBA players.”
SETON HALL TO OFFER MACKSeton Hall is expected to offer a scholarship to Paterson Catholic junior guard Myles Mack this week, sources said.
The 5-10, 160-pound Mack may attend the Cincinnati-Seton Hall game Saturday at the Prudential Center, but said he wasn’t sure if he would.
Mack, who currently holds offers from Fordham, St. John’s, La Salle, Drexel, Penn State, Hofstra, Providence, Rice and DePaul, is the point guard of a Cougars team ranked No. 9 in the nation by PrepNation.com.
He received MVP honors in the Palm City Classic after posting 15 points, 2 assists and 2 steals in a thrilling 62-54 victory over Austin Rivers and Winter Park (Fla.) in the championship game.
After putting up 21 points, 6 boards and 3 steals, Mack was also named MVP against Huntington (West Va.) Prep in PC’s 70-67 OT victory last Friday. He then scored 23 points in the Cougars 75-55 victory Sunday over St. Peter’s Prep.
“He is a very good player who’s going to get better,” one Big East coach said. “He can shoot the ball.”
Seton Hall has a commitment from Mack’s teammate, senior forward Fuquan Edwin. The Pirates are also involved with New Jersey junior point guards Tyrone Johnson of Plainfield High and Sterling Gibbs of Seton Hall Prep, as well as Mount Vernon’s Jabarie Hinds.Follow Adam Zagoria on Twitter
