Whoever becomes the next coach at St. John’s will inherit an experienced team with nine seniors that could make a run at the 2011 NCAA tournament.
That person will also inherit a team with as many as nine scholarships to give for the incoming class.
That very fact was one of the reasons St. John’s athletic director Chris Monasch fired Norm Roberts last Thursday after six seasons.
“We’re coming upon a very important year in our program’s history with nine scholarships being available. We thought it was in the best interests of our program for the long term to go in a different direction,” Monasch said last week on a conference call with reporters.
