Brandon Knight added a major award, but lost a school on Tuesday.
Knight, the 6-3 guard out of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Pine Crest ranked the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2010, became just the third player to win back-to-back Gatorade National Player of the Year awards. Former NBA star Alonzo Mourning presented Knight with the honor. Mourning won the honor in 1998.
LeBron James and Greg Oden were the other two players to win the honor in back-to-back years.
“It’s a great honor to be in this category,” Knight said, according to RivalsHigh. “It adds a little pressure, but that’s what makes a lot of great athletes, that they are able to thrive under pressure.”
Knight finished his career as Broward County’s all-time leading scorer with 3,515 points.
Scout.com also broke the news that Florida removed itself from the Knight Sweepstakes.
“Correct,” a source close to the UF program confirmed to me.
That leaves Kentucky, Kansas and UConn in the mix with many believing Knight will end up replacing John Wall at Kentucky. Wall is likely to be the No. 1 pick in the June NBA Draft.
“Kentucky is probably where he ends up,” a source close to the situation previously told me.
“I look at making this decision as one of the most important decisions I”ll make in my life,” Knight recently said in SLAM magazine. “As a result, I am being very patient so I will make the right decision and go to a place that will best benefit me as a person, student and athlete.”
