New Rutgers head coach Mike Rice continues to bring in the top players from New Jersey and the surrounding area for visits.
The same week that Kadeem Jack unofficially toured campus, 6-foot-8 forward LaQuinton Ross of Burlington (N.J.) Life Center came to Piscataway.
“I took a visit out there,” Ross said Friday by phone on his way to Los Angeles for the Pangos all-american camp. “It was good. I liked the campus a lot and the new coaches over there.
I talked to the head coach and the assistants and I played.” Ross, the No. 10 small forward in the Class of 2011, transferred to the New Jersey school midseason from Murrah (Miss.) High and averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds. He lists a Who’s Who of colleges recruiting him, including West Virginia, Baylor, Maryland, Texas, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Syracuse and Villanova. He has been to both Rutgers and Seton Hall. Dion Waiters, his former Burlington teammate, will be a freshman at Syracuse. “I could see myself playing anywhere, any conference,” he said. Ross will attend the NBA Top 100 camp and the LeBron James Academy later this summer and then plans to trim his list. “I’m probably going to narrow my top five by the end of the summer,” he said. FREE THROWS Forest Hills (Queens) coach Ben Chobhaphand says 2011 wing Maurice Harkless remains committed to UConn despite the recent coaching changes. “Nothing has changed with UConn,” he wrote by text. “And he is still very committed to UConn and Coach Calhoun.”…Former Hofstra guard Chaz Williams unofficially visited Seton Hall Friday. “It went great,” he said by text. The 5-9 Williams takes an official to UMass Monday/Tuesday before hitting Rutgers unofficially Thursday…Rice High junior wing Jermaine Sanders will visit Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Fordham “over the next month,” according to Kimani Young of New Heights…Former St. Anthony guard Elijah Carter says he will prep next year at either South Kent (Conn.) or Brewster (N.H.) Academy. South Kent will also feature Harkless and Jack...Kavon Stewart, a talented freshman at Paterson Catholic, says he may land next year at Hudson Catholic playing for Nick Mariniello. “I’m thinking about Hudson Catholic. I’m really close with the coach there,” Stewart told ZAGSBLOG contributor Alex Kline. Asked if teammate Reggie Cameron would join him, he said, “Yes.
