St. Anthony will feature an all-Paterson Catholic backcourt next season.
Myles Mack, a rising senior point guard ranked No. 21 at his position in the Class of 2011, has chosen to attend St. Anthony in Jersey City for his senior season. Mack, who averaged 14.8 points and 2.8 steals last year, spent the past three seasons at Paterson Catholic, which is set to close its doors in June.
He will team will rising junior guard Kyle Anderson, another former PC player who previously announced his decision to play for Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley.
“[Mack’s] mother did call me and I think at this point he’s leaning toward going to St. Anthony,” Hurley said Sunday evening.
Neither Myles Mack nor his father, Wayne Sr., were immediately available for comment Sunday.
The 5-foot-10 Mack considered St. Anthony, St. Patrick and St. Benedict’s.
Now he and Anderson will become the top two players at St. Anthony, the team that eliminated Paterson Catholic in the North Non-Public B title game this past season.
“It’s unrealistic not to think that they would be our two best players,” Hurley said. “You put them out there and you put other guys around them.”
Hurley said he had mixed feelings about the situation. He feels badly that another Catholic school is closing, but is pleased that Anderson and Mack will be Friars.
“We”re providing them an opportunity,” he said. “We’re not trying to duplicate the school that they’re at. I feel terrible [about Paterson Catholic]. I see in them what can happen to us at any time.”
Like Mack, current USC guard Jio Fontan is a Paterson, N.J. native who ended up playing for Hurley at St. Anthony.
“I’m happy for Myles,” Fontan, who led the Friars to a 32-0 record and a mythical national championship in 2007-08, said by text. “He’s been having a great high school career so now hopefully for his senior year he can win a state title and a national title to cap of his high school career.”
St. Anthony loses guard Elijah Carter (prep school) and forwards Devon Collier (Oregon State), Derrick Williams (Richmond) and Ashton Pankey (Maryland), yet now brings in two high-major prospects.
A 6-foot-8, 215-pound North Bergen, N.J. native, Anderson has interest from Miami, Georgetown, Kentucky, La Salle, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Seton Hall.
Mack’s Rivals’ profile lists offers from Fordham, St. John’s, Providence and Virginia.
“They’re very good players,” Hurley said. “We’re going to coach them they’re going to be here for a length of the time. This was out of the their control. We can’t be Paterson Catholic to them. We can only be who we are. We’re affording them an opportunity to play at our school.
“They’re very talented and they’re going to greatly enhance what we planned to be doing this coming year. I have mixed emotions. I feel very good that we have them and I feel bad that their school closed.”
Kavon Stewart, a talented freshman at Paterson Catholic, says he may land next year at Hudson Catholic playing for Nick Mariniello.
“I’m thinking about Hudson Catholic. I’m really close with the coach there,” Stewart told ZAGSBLOG contributor Alex Kline.
Asked if teammate Reggie Cameron would join him, he said, “Yes.
