West Virginia picked up a verbal commitment Tuesday from Tommie McCune, a 6-foot-7 power forward from Saginaw, Mich.
McCune, ranked No. 29 at his position in the Class of 2011 by Rivals, committed after an unofficial visit to Morgantown Tuesday.
“Tommie McCune has committed to West Virginia,” All Ohio Red coach Benji Burke told Alex Kline of The Recruit Scoop. “He committed about twenty minutes ago.
“He thought it was the right time to commit and I think it is a great decision.”
McCune chose West Virginia over Rhode Island, Baylor, USC, Xavier, Providence and Minnesota.
MORELAND ELIGIBLE AT OREGON STATE
Oregon State coach Craig Robinson got some good news when he learned that UTEP transfer Eric Moreland would be immediately eligible in 2010.
The NCAA ruled that the 6-9 Moreland could compete right away because he never played at UTEP for Tony Barbee, calling it “special circumstances.’’ He was only there for three months.
“It’s big, because one of the things we were really worried about this season was depth and having another player of Eric Moreland’s quality available is going to help out a whole lot,’’ Robinson told OregonLive.com.
Robinson said Moreland, “has got a motor like no other player we’ve had, so we’re really looking forward to getting him on the court.’’
JOHNSON TO ST. PAT’S
Dakari Johnson, a 6-8 2014 big man from New York, will play for St. Patrick this season, according to The Recruit Scoop.
“It was the best decision for me academically and athletically,” he told the site. “They play a national schedule and I really like that. The atmosphere there was great, as well.”
St. Pat’s has reloaded after the graduation of Kyrie Irving, adding Johnson and point guard Da’Shawn Suber to a core that includes seniors Michael Gilchrist and Derrick Gordon and sophomores Austin Colbert and Jason Boswell.
